Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State LA is proud to present an intimate, virtual evening with Grammy Award-winning singer Lila Downs. One of the world’s most singular and powerful voices, Lila’s compelling stage presence and poignant storytelling transcend all language barriers. This special, full-length presentation was filmed at the beautiful Teatro Macedonia Alcalá in Oaxaca, Mexico without an audience and using innovative cinematography and movement direction to produce an engaging and one-of-a-kind presentation. Also included in the presentation are segments with Lila discussing the traditional clothing and famous culinary traditions of the state of Oaxaca. A must-see for the entire family!
Performing her classic hits – plus songs from her most recent album, Al Chile – Lila Downs pays homage to chile and the complicated relationship the Mexican people have with the fiery fruit that causes them happiness, suffering, sweat, and joyful tears. “Food and emotions are very similar in the way that they take us on a journey that can be very complex and spiritual,” says Downs. “Chile is one of the mysteries of the Mexican personality and Mexican people. It is addictive and brings us happiness as well as a painful effect. It is part of our character. If you think about it in terms of our social and political lives, it is part of us in Mexico as well in all of Latin America.”
