Kany Diabaté: A Virtual Experience is part of a season-long series of digital segments that bring you up close and personal with artists from a variety of art disciplines.
Born in a family entirely comprised of artists, Kany began dancing at age 5. She first followed family tradition by doing African dance which led her to the national junior ballet of Senegal. Many years later, she started to train in hip hop and funk styles in Paris and New York. Kany joined several companies at the beginning of her career such as Montalvo-Hervieu and won choreography battles and competitions with her own company UNITY. As soon as Kany moved to the U.S., she had the opportunity to work for Cirque du Soleil, Michael Jackson, Ariana Grande, Brandy, Christina Aguilera, Demi Lovato, and many more. She has also had the opportunity to choreograph and work for Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Trevor Jackson. Kany always found it important to incorporate her roots and her African knowledge into her teachings. To help put it on the map, she created her very own style and class called AFROMOVES. So many movements have cultural ties that lead back to Africa. Kany’s AFROMOVES connects African and modern techniques—blending the two together seamlessly.
